Americans consumption of sugar approaches 200 pounds per person, annually, and often we are not aware of it. Average sugar consumption in 1700 was 4 pounds per person. Average sugar consumption in 2008 was 180 pounds per person annually. All carbohydrates sweeteners qualify as sugar even though they may be called by other names. Names such as corn syrup, sucrose, honey. Watch out for words ending in - ose, which indicates the presence of sugar. Even medicines aren't immune from added sweeteners. Excessive sugar intake is directly or indirectly a factor associated with the increase in hypoglycemia, diabetes, arthritis, heart disease, hypertension, gallstones, and back problems.
